The HPI E10 RTR model is a gold standard when it comes to intro drift cars. Being ready to race, and having the price point at around $200 makes it the perfect option for a beginner or someone looking for a solid drift car to mess around with.
Available in Mustang or Nissan S13 trim, this drift car comes equipped with drive shaft driven 4×4, drift tires, rechargable NiMH batteries, and a high-torque Saturn 27T 540 motor to have you turned sideways right out of the box.
I would recommend this drift car for the budget minded RC enthusiast, or an experienced RC driver looking to expand into drifting – you really can’t go wrong with the HPI E10 RTR in any of the available skins – I personally really like the looks of the Mustang.
HPI RTR Sprint 2 Drift
Another HPI drift car you say? These guys must like their drift cars! HPI is well known for being drift enthusiasts and their product line reflects it. The Sprint 2 Drift is another RTR model that I always suggest if budget is not a concern – it’s a pretty substantial upgrade (and price upgrade) from the E10 – let’s see why:

HPI Micro RS4 Drift Car
Closing off the list with what I think is the best value drift car is the HPI Micro RS4. It’s basically a small package micro-scale HPI car that delivers all of the drifting fun for the best possible price! It might not be as big as the other cars but it’s built with quality HPI parts and has a strong motor to boot. This is by far the best price for a quality drift car. Best budget drift car right here!
Exceed RC Electric DriftStar RTR Drift Car 350
This is in my opinion the most extreme budget option on this list. Exceed doesn’t have a really great reputation as an RC brand as their parts are not built the best, but in a pinch and on a budget this is an RTR drift car that will turn sideways around the track.
Coming in at just over $100 you get a 4×4 system that’s drive shaft driven. It does have a powerful 540 brushed motor, and the front and rear suspension aren’t terrible. I’d only recommend this drift car if you’re really tight on budget.

So you’ve seen some options on the available drift cars here, but you might be wondering how to go about choosing between the various options available – let’s go over a few.
Brushed vs Brushless Motor for Drifting
Low end cars are normally going to have a brushed motor which is more budget friendly. Higher-end cars will have brushless motors which require less maintenance.
Brushless motors provide more power so obviously they’re preferred but it all depends on the budget available. Brushless motor use magnets to power the drive line where brushed motors use “brushes” which can wear down over time, and take in debris which can damage the motor.
Overall brushless motors are much more desirable – if you plan on upgrading one day, be sure that your car’s computer is compatible.
Belt vs Drive Shaft for RC Drifting
This is a fairly large debate within the RC drifting community – I personally prefer belt driven for a few reasons but belts also have their downfalls.
Drive shafts are solid, and therefore conquer the belt when it comes to durability.
Drive shafts deliver instant power where as belts have delay – this is a better aspect for racing and can cause issues when drifting due to the large amount of torque being delivered to the wheels.
Belt drives absorb some of that high instant torque delivered by powerful electric motors which makes drifting a bit easier to control and it reduces “torque steer” which is when your car will randomly turn to one direction due to the power transfer at the wheels.
Can’t I drift with any car?
Well yes, but it needs to be properly set up. The cars on this list are ready to drift options with appropriately powered motors, and drifting tires – which are the most important things when it comes to drifting.
The motor needs to provide enough torque to turn the car sideways to enter the drift, and the wheels need to be low enough resistance (smooth enough) to maintain the drift.
If you wanted to turn your street/racing/touring car into a drift car a good first place to start would be trying out some drift tires with the existing motor to see if it’ll turn sideways, and if not then I would look at upgrading the motor.
How do I drift anyways?
Drifting isn’t terribly complicated but there are more advanced techniques to learn and improve upon as you get more practice. The basics are to accelerate into a corner, turn sharply into the corner, then counter steer to enter the drift, and neutralize the wheel – control the drift with the gas and brakes as you go around the corner.
